Re: Re: Christmas time is no time to be giving away puppies

Cattle have a similar problem. We had a big cow die when my youngest was about eight. My husband necropsied her, trying to figure out what was wrong. Alyssa, having seen plenty of dead chickens, goats, sheep, turkeys, etc., by then, told her dad that the heart looked pussy, like a big abcess. He thought it just looked like there was a lot of yellowish fat on it. I got home from work, and he called me out to look over the body, because he couldn't figure out what was wrong. But Alyssa had gotten it right. When I sliced open the yellowish "fat" I found that the dang cow had eaten half of a diet Coke can (think of the razor sharp edges of a torn can) and it had sliced through one of her stomachs and into the sack around her heart. There was a huge clump (literally pounds) of hard pus pushing on the heart, which caused it to fail. It's called "hardware disease". Cattle will eat the dangest things. When I sliced open the heart, it looked like the can had also nicked the heart, but it was hard to tell. We couldn't eat her, but Ronald got a good hide and the dogs ate hearty for months after that. As for your dog, they can get that way too. Pups can get into so much trouble from eating inedible things. I used to be like your husband, believe it or not. I think I lost that when I got morning sickness with my first kid. I was in college at the time. I would go get sick in the ladies room between classes and then run to my next class. If guys had to do that, maybe they would get over it too.... ;)
