Like all birds, emus automatically investigate anything shiny (my camera)....usually by picking at it or eating it. And when the birds are as big as these emus, that can be a problem. (The big females are usually eye-to-eye with me, and I am 5' 2 1/2"--and they can extend their necks higher than the top of my head.) The picture doesn't do them justice; where there is no feathers, the skin is a beautiful blue. I am not sure why it looks so washed out in this picture.
The whole time I was trying to take pictures of the emus (they are on sale after all), the dang tom turkeys drove me nuts. I think we need to either put some of them in the freezer or sell a few. We have far too many toms for the few hens.
