This is Ginger and her foal, Irish Spice. Spice got her name because she was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1992. This picture was taken the day she was born. Notice how huge she is compared with her mother. By the time she was three months old, she sometimes nursed with her knees on the ground like a lamb or goat kid. (The mare was barely 14 hands, the stud was nearly 17 hands.)
We ended up selling Ginger and her foal about a year later. Ginger was purchased for Jessica to ride, but the mare did not like women. She behaved okay for men, but when anyone female got on her back, she would either try to knock them off with a tree or rear backwards and fall on them. She did this with both Jessica and I. When I tried riding her, she tried to reach around and ripped me out of the saddle.
Ron could ride her with no problems. I don't know why some horses are like that.
