I am not sure how many people realized it at the time, but the Express Bank partially belonged to Nolan Ryan.  I just found some old un-used checks from before he sold his stake to First Community (and prior to them selling their stake to Wells Fargo).

Funny, when I was in high school in King City, California (one of the two I went to each year), a boyfriend asked me to sign a note saying he was sick so he could watch Nolan Ryan pitch in some sort of after season game.  I had no idea who in heck Nolan Ryan was---and I was absolutely scandalized to be asked to sign a note like that.  I still did it, but felt very guilty.  We broke up shortly after that.

I wonder if that boy ever grew out of his hero worship.  He sure broke me of mine that day.  People always seem to jump off the pedestals we put them on--they stubbornly want to be real people, not paragons or saints.
